Alexander Dean
Davis Kirk
March 9, 1938 – February 7, 2023
Alexander Dean Davis Kirk, age 84 of Wytheville, VA, passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2023. Born March 9, 1938, in Smyth County, VA., He was the son of the late Alexander Minitry Kirk and Helen Reeves Kirk. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Cleveland "Sonny" Kirk and sister-in-law Betty Kirk, brother-in-law Kyle Clayton Boone and by 8 half brothers and sisters.
Dean grew up with his large and loving family in Nebo, VA, graduating from Ceres High School in 1955 before attending Emory & Henry College in Emory, VA. He proudly served his country in the United States Army for more than a decade and extended his service to the community as a Virginia State Trooper for 13 years in both Arlington and Abingdon, VA.
In 1973, Dean moved his family to Wytheville, VA where he and his business partner founded and operated Builders Supermarket, Incorporated and later purchased and operated Wythe Lumber Company. He proudly and effectively served as President of these organizations for 48 years. As a devoted Christian, he was a member and regular attendee of West End United Methodist Church, serving on numerous Church boards and committees over the years. Dean was also active as a member of Lodge 82 Masonic Lodge in Wytheville.
Having grown up on his family's ancestral farm in Nebo, VA, Dean thoroughly appreciated and loved the beauty of "the (Rich) Valley" and the generations of people that thrived and lived there. He was passionate about running Kirk Farms, Inc., and his favorite pastime was working the farm alongside his children and grandchildren.
By far, Dean's proudest accomplishment and achievement was his family. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Phyllis, for 59 years and proud father of three children, Davis, Deanna, and Erin. He loved being "Poppa" to his 10 grandchildren and was recently blessed with his first great-grandchild. When speaking of his family, his smile beamed readily and eyes filled with grateful tears…but perhaps his most telling legacy is the beaming smiles and grateful tears of Dean's family when they speak of the love and wisdom he provided to them. He will be forever loved and remembered by all.
He is survived by wife Phyllis Patrick Kirk of the home; son Davis Patrick Kirk of Wytheville, VA; two daughters Deanna Kirk and Daniel Earl Mabe of Wytheville, VA., Erin Kirk and Robert Andrew Hallman of Cornelius, NC; sister Helen Boone of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Grandchildren Jason Patrick Kirk, Kara Elizabeth Kirk, Taylor Mabe Ferguson, Avery Kirk Mabe, Travis Steven Hallman, Kayla Michelle Hallman, Hunter Dean Henderlite, Jessica Leigh Hallman, Reagan Davis Henderlite, and Colin Samuel Hallman; Great Grandchild Emmett Roy Ferguson; Several Nieces and Nephews; and many extended Family and Friends also survive.
