Betty Sue
Carpenter Marshall
May 9, 1938 – May 10, 2025
Betty Sue Carpenter Marshall, age 87, of Austinville, VA passed away Saturday, May 10, 2025. She was born May 9, 1938 in Wythe County, daughter of the late Reverend Raymond A. Carpenter and Vada Mae Sharp Carpenter. She was preceded in death by her son, Rixie Marshall.
Betty Sue worked through the years as a seamstress at Hanes, Quality Mills and Sara Lee. She enjoyed being active and kept working well past the time most folks retire.
Betty Sue loved to spend time with family and friends. She was a giver - from huge hugs, tokens of appreciation, loving smiles, food made with love and other ways.
Travel was a huge enjoyment, especially in later years when she and Elden took chartered bus trips. She was so excited when she could finally say she had been to all 50 states.
Betty Sue was a long-time member of Poplar Camp Church of God of Prophecy. She loved her church family deeply – Life revolved around conventions, assemblies, revivals and special services. She loved this life and was energized by her church family.
But there was a deeper love that was foundational to all of the other parts of her life – her love for God. She was faithful to her Creator and Savior. She knew the power of prayer.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Elden G. Marshall of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Jonathan Shewbridge of Roanoke, VA; granddaughter, Lindsey Morgan and husband, Austin of Roanoke; great grandson, Bennett Morgan; best friend, Donna Eversole Bell. Many extended family, friends and church family also survive.
The family will receive friends Friday, May 16, 2025 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Poplar Camp Church of God of Prophecy. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 17th at the church with Reverend Lonnie Frazier and Reverend Gary Vernon officiating. Burial will follow in Bethany Community Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Poplar Camp Church of God of Prophecy or Botetourt Church of God of Prophecy.
