"B.B." Porter
August 10, 1929 – April 27, 2025
Bradford Berlin "B.B." Porter passed away Sunday, April 27, 2025. He was the son of the late William Walter Porter and Myrtle Ann Shepherd. B.B. was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Barbara Ann Porter; sisters Anise Harman and Evelyn Graham and a brother Harold Porter.
He was born August 10, 1929 in Carroll County, VA and lived most of his life in Wythe County. He graduated from Jackson Memorial High School and attended Lynchburg College before enlisting with the U.S. Army. He served during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
During his working career, he was employed by Appalachian Power Company, New Jersey Zinc Company, Alco Controls and retired from Virginia Tech as Manager of Central Stores.
B.B. was an avid fisherman, casting lines from the coast of Florida, through the New York salmon runs, to the salmon rivers of Alaska, as well as many lakes, rivers and creeks in-between. He enjoyed small game hunting, especially grouse, with his bird dogs. B.B. was a master gardener, bee keeper and had his own grape vines from which he made Chambourcin wine. He was a Past Master of Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge #235.
B.B. was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by daughter Patricia Hubbard (R.D. Wilson), daughter Joyce (Jerry) Owen and son Bradford "Brad" (Katy) Porter; grandchildren Kim (Arek) Moss, Sarah (Jym) Baker, Chad (LeighAnn) Owen, Stephen (Samantha) Owen, Molly (Adam) Lawson and Greg Porter; great-grandchildren Dylan and Adian Moss, Trey and Grace Ann Baker, Madelyn Owen; a special niece Ann (Rick) Schaffer and a very special cousin and fishing buddy Chuck Hamm (Shirley Brown). He also leaves behind other beloved relatives and numerous friends.
A special thank you for the care and support given B.B. by Ann and Howard Manley and to his caregivers Regina, Keith, Michelle and Missy.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2025 at the Barnett Funeral Home with the Reverend Hugh Matlack officiating. Entombment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Rural Retreat.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 29th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge # 235 will conduct Masonic Rites memorial service at 7 p.m. following visitation.
