Obituary

Carolyn Hatfield Melton, age 71, passed away on May 4, 2026, in her home. Born on June 20, 1954, in Mill Creek, West Virginia, Carolyn lived a life full of love and laughter.

Carolyn cherished the simple joys in life. She graduated from Baileysville High School in ‘72 and was awarded best dancer in her senior class. She had a love for music, especially Dolly Parton, as well as dancing, animals, and all things beauty. If you knew Carolyn, you knew she was proud of her heritage, as she was a great-great-granddaughter of William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield. She was a proud cosmetologist whose passion for her work led her to become the owner of Jon Carr Salon for many years. She truly never met a stranger and had a gift for making everyone feel loved and welcomed. Her kindness and ability to see the best in others left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mabel Hatfield; her sister, Velma Hatfield Webb; her brother, Johnny Hatfield; her nephew, Jaron Cody Hatfield; and Jason McDaniel Hatfield.

She is survived by her loving husband, Robert Graham Melton; her daughters, Seneca Haley and Morgan Connor Goins; her son-in-law, Jacob Goins; her daughter-in-law, Leysa Melton Cox; her daughter-in-law, Amanda Melton Lathrop, and her son-in-law, Robby Melton. She is also survived by her brothers, Jackie Hatfield, Joey Hatfield, and Shawn Allen, her brother-in-law, Jamie Melton; her special niece, Whitney Webb; her special nephew, Johnse Hatfield and Jackie Hatfield, several other nieces and nephews; her grandchildren, Jaron, Reagan, Gage, Jolena, Sam, Haley, Brayden, Bryson, and Nicholas; her great-grandchildren, Hayden, Carter, Oliver, Knox, Levi, and Price; and her beloved dogs, Tiny, Jojo, and Pedro.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 5:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at 7:00 PM at Fort Chiswell Church of God. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Viars Cemetery.

Carolyn’s life was one to be celebrated. She will be remembered for her warmth, her laughter, and the love she gave so freely. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched.
