Obituary

Dana Richard "Dickie" Pack, age 77, of Cripple Creek, VA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 16, 2025. He was born February 22, 1948, in Cripple Creek, the son of the late Richard Lee Pack and Edna Mae Jonas Pack. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Gallimore Pack; a sister, Catherine "Katie" Pack Jones (Edward); two brothers, Harry Pack (Peggy) and Dennis "Jake" Pack.

Dickie was a graduate of Rural Retreat High School and a proud veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Vietnam Era. He was a Century Link retiree.

Growing up by the creek, Dickie developed a love of nature. He marked his calendar with the dates he first spotted returning migratory birds, planted and harvested many gardens, photographed wildlife and landscapes, and watched the night sky. He was an avid fisherman.

Post-retirement, Dickie volunteered his time to Speedwell Elementary School where he touched young lives as he spent hours assisting teachers and reading to young students. He was awarded Volunteer of the Year multiple times and was featured in a front-page article in the local newspaper as the "Reading Rock-Star". Dickie also served his community as a member of several committees and on the board of the Joint IDA and donated to many charities.

At the request of his daughter, Angie, Dickie received his Credentials of Ministry so that he could perform her wedding ceremony. This led to a flood of requests from family and friends for Dickie to perform their ceremonies, too, and he enthusiastically agreed. He always felt honored to play a part in a couple's joy.

Dickie was a faithful Lutheran and a life-long member of United Lutheran Church. He was recognized by United Lutheran Family Services of Virginia Hearts & Hands "For loving, cheerful, dedicated ministry to the elementary school students of his community". He regularly served on the Church's council and as President. He was the long-time director of the St Peter's Cemetery fund dutifully ensuring its care.

Most of all, Dickie loved and cherished his family, as they did him, especially his daughter, Angie. He gave sage advice, celebrated successes, and provided support and comfort during missteps and periods of need. He was witty, mischievous, and loved to laugh.

Dickie leaves a legacy of love and service to his church, country, community, and especially to his family and friends. He is the epitome of a life well lived. He will be missed but never forgotten by those fortunate enough to have crossed his path on this earth.

Survivors include his daughter, Angela "Angie" Pack; three sisters, Nancy Pack Grubb (Johnny), Iva Pack Scherberger (Rick) and Leisa Pack; two brothers, Rex Pack (Rachel) and Rodney Pack, many nieces and nephews, "adopted" brothers, and special members of the Horton family.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 at the United Lutheran Church in Crockett, VA, with memorial service immediately following at the church on Thursday, November 20, 2025, with Pastor Steve Dew officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in memory of Dickie be given to St. Peters Cemetery fund, Attn: Betty Guynn, 110 Edgewood Road, Crockett, VA 24323.

Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, VA is serving the Pack family.
