David Tyler Delp, age 71, of Rural Retreat, Virginia and the Cedar Springs community, died Wednesday, September 4, 2024, after a 17 month battle with Glioblastoma. He was born in Wytheville, Virginia on August 29, 1953. David was the son of the late Philip and Jean Kidd Delp. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kristin Ashford Delp.
David graduated from Rural Retreat High School in 1971 and from Virginia Tech in 1976 with a degree in Industrial Arts. He taught Industrial Arts at Narrows High School from 1976 to 1991. He concluded his teaching career in Building Trades at the Wythe County Technology Center from 1991 until his retirement in 2010. David was a man of many talents and truly an original. He farmed tobacco and cattle, built houses and taught school – all at the same time. David could fix anything and often did. He also enjoyed collecting "treasures" especially anything Allis Chalmers. He had a soft spot for children and animals, and they had a soft spot for him.
David is survived by three daughters, Ann Delp (Andy Brewer), Amy O'Brien (Kevin) and Bobbi Delp (Michael Weich); a step-daughter, Kate Carpenter (Mike); two brothers, Rick Delp (Karen) and Ken Delp (Amanda); two sisters, Debra Terry (Dickie) and Sarah Alfano (Matt); his grandchildren, Tyler Caudill (Rosa), Lilly Caudill, Grace Atwell (Jacob), Lydia Brewer, Fox Brewer, Peyton Brewer, Lucas Brewer, Keeley O'Brien, Kerrington O'Brien, Foster Weich, Savannah Weich, Lila Carpenter, Casey Carpenter; great grand-daughter, Jocelyn Caudill; special nephew, Chad Delp (Hannah) and children Harper, Cord and Cable; special niece, Cara Grubb (Charlie) and children Caimin and Calina, along with
several other nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat from 5pm to 8pm on Saturday evening, September, 7, 2024. A private family service will be held at a later date. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of David can be sent to Grace Lutheran Church, 514 S Main Street, PO Box 478, Rural Retreat, Virginia 24368.
