Douglas MacArthur Carty

Douglas MacArthur (Mac) Carty, 84, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2026. Born on June 18, 1942, in Castlewood, Virginia, he was the son of the late Asa and Hazel Carty.

On August 12, 1967, Mac married the love of his life, Billy Jean Walters Carty. Together they built a life centered on family, community, and service, sharing 59 wonderful years of marriage.

Mac dedicated his professional career to education, shaping the lives of countless students as a teacher across Tazewell, Bland, and Washington counties. Beyond the classroom, he was deeply committed to the well-being of his neighbors, serving as a charter member of the Bland County Medical Clinic and playing a pivotal role in establishing healthcare services within the county. Following his retirement from teaching, Mac returned to his roots on the family farm, where he took great pride in raising purebred Charolais cattle under the name DMC Charolais.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers, William J. Carty and Lowell Carty.

In addition to his beloved wife, Billy Jean, Mac is survived by his two daughters, Sherry Margaret Carty Vetere (Pete) and Sandra Jean Carty Kim (Arnold); his four cherished grandchildren, Gabe Vetere, Eva Vetere, Penelope Kim, and Oliver Kim; his sister, Loretta Carty; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Bland Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM at Bland Funeral Chapel with Rev Alan Ashworth officiating. Interment will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery in Bastian, Virginia.
