Everett Bruce Porter, born January 7, 1933, died Saturday, August 5, at Wythe County Community Hospital.  He received his Bachelor's degree from Lincoln Memorial University and Masters from the University of Virginia.  His career as an educator in the Virginia public school system began in 1954 and spanned more than thirty years, during which time he taught in Wythe County and Fairfax County, and served in the capacities of Vice Principal and Guidance Counselor at Rural Retreat High School.   He also served as   Registrar at Wytheville Community College.  He and wife, Nell, purchased the first portion of their Rural Retreat farm in 1960 and expanded their farm and herd of registered Aberdeen Angus cattle over the years.  For over fifty years, he was Master Mason at the Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Blanche Porter of Cripple Creek, sisters Martha and husband Earl Padgett, Carolyn and husband JD Crockett.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nell Halsey Porter, three daughters; Pat and husband Rusty Sneed of Marion, Pam and husband Jeffrey Leonard of Sugar Grove, and Polly and husband Del Crigger of Wytheville.   Also surviving are brothers Norris and wife Marie of Durham, NC, Bobby of Mayodan, NC, and Jerry and wife Linda of Cripple Creek, and sister Sue and husband Bob Ayers of Wytheville, sister-in-law Hazel and husband Jay Harper of Marion, and many nieces and nephews.
