Gary Randall Tate "Randy", 69, of Wythe County passed away peacefully on Monday, August 10, 2026 at his home in Popular Camp, VA. He is now united with his Momma and Daddy in heaven, likely flat footing to the music of George Jones.
Randy was born April 16,1957 in Wytheville, VA, to the late David Lee "Red" and Ruby Tate. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Clayton Tate and a sister, Novella McPeak.
A man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life, Randy loved to listen to his buddies pick the guitar and sing. He spent many peaceful hours walking the New River Trail. He loved helping anyone who crossed his path and he never met a stranger. He also had a natural gift for buying, selling, and trading around for "goodies" as he called them. Above all, Randy cherished the time he spent with his family. Known by all as a Renaissance soul, there was nothing he couldn't do. His warm spirit, unforgettable sense of adventure, with a quiet exterior hiding an unexpected sense of humor will deeply be missed by all that knew him. He has left a mark on the hearts of everyone who was lucky enough to have ever met him. There will never be another Randy Tate.
Survivors include his son, Clayton Lee Tate; daughter, Jessie Megan Tate; two sisters, Evelyn Grimes and Nancy Somers and a brother, Roger Tate; four grandchildren, C.J. Tate, Chris Tate, Jerrico BullTail and Andromida BullTail.
A Celebration of his Life will be held Saturday, August 29, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at Carter’s Wayside Park, E. Lee Highway, Max Meadows, VA.
Reese Funeral Home, Austinville, VA is serving the Tate family.
