Hassel Norman Smith "Red" 89, of Bland, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at home surrounded by family.

Born June 23, 1933 in Red Ash, Virginia, the son of the late George Robert and Mary Lawson Smith. Red retired as a machinist.  He enjoyed farming, gardening, and front porch sitting.  Red especially enjoyed Sundays when the house and yard were filled with the laughter of the kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.

He was preceded in death by twelve siblings, a daughter-in-law, and a son-in-law.

Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-eight years, Polly Smith; seven children, Pam (Gary) Collins, Jerry Smith, Connie (Ray) Puckett, Kim (John) Goins, Sue Umbarger, Patty (Rich) Hankins, Patrick (Helen) Smith, fourteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren with one on the way, three brothers Lloyd, Roba, Clyde (Jean) Smith, one sister Effie Fuller, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 3, 2023 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Bland Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2023 at the Bastian Church of God with Pastor Cliff Bowman officiating. Burial will follow at the Bland Cemetery.
