Hattie Martha (Jackson) Duprey

October 16, 1939 – December 28, 2025

Hattie Martha (Jackson) Duprey, a woman of sly humor, adventurous spirit, and a kind heart, passed away on December 28, 2025, at the age of 86. Born among the rolling hills of the Poplar Camp and Lead Mines areas of Austinville, Virginia, Hattie’s life was rooted in the beauty of the countryside she grew up in.

The daughter of the late James and Lucy Jackson, Hattie was a spirited soul from her earliest days. Having overcome rheumatic fever as a child and several back surgeries in her later years, she remained a strong and steady presence for all who knew her. She was a dutiful daughter and a devoted sister to her late sibling, Margaret Ann Barton.

Hattie’s life was a testament to Christian love in action. Though she was quiet regarding her faith (and politics), her heart was full of service. A faithful Methodist, she spent her years as a dedicated Den Mother for the Boy Scouts, ensuring her children were raised with the values of the church and community. Her kitchen was a place of gatherings, famous for her strong coffee, signature casseroles, and the can goods from her garden. Her hand-written recipes and the clothes she sewed for her family and neighbors bring the family so many fond memories.

She was a woman of many talents and a surprising sense of adventure. Whether water skiing well into her fifties, camping, fishing, or traveling the craft festival circuits of Virginia and Texas, Hattie embraced life. Even in her final days, her quick, self-deprecating wit made her a favorite among her neighbors and caregivers, her smile and warm grip never dimmed.

Hattie was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Charles R. Duprey Sr.; and her sister, Margaret.

She is survived by her three sons: Charles R. Duprey, Jr.; Kevin Duprey and wife Millicent; and Keith Duprey and husband Mike Wiegert. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Hunter Duprey, Meris Duprey, William Wiegert, and Whitney Duprey Berg. She was especially close to her dear cousin, Jackie Cregger, and longtime friends Patsey Underwood and Betty Bryant (deceased). She will be remembered fondly by her dear Mississippi and Florida family as well.

While her family will miss her deeply, they find great comfort in knowing that Hattie is now whole and at peace in Heaven and the joy in being reunited with her husband, Charles, and the many loved ones who went before her.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Bethany United Methodist Church in Austinville, Virginia. A short reception for family and friends will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Hattie’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Vietnam Veterans of America, reflecting her lifelong belief in supporting the armed service, loving and supporting children, and generosity giving to those in need. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, VA is serving the Duprey family.
