Obituary

Helen C. Halsey, age 90 of Ivanhoe, passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2017, in Waddell Nursing Home in Galax, VA. She was born to the late David M. Crockett and Bessie Holloway Crockett on June 6, 1927. Helen attended Wytheville Training Center, Wytheville VA, before attending Bluefield State College in Bluefield WV.  In August of 1944 she wed the love of her life, John Halsey of Marion, VA, in which two daughters were born.

Church, family and friends were Helen's passion and delight. She grew up in Ivanhoe and was a lifetime member of Mt Carmel Baptist Church, where for many years she held office of Church Clerk and President of the Mt Carmel Women's Foreign and Home Mission.  Through her membership at Mt Carmel, Helen also attended many meetings and served as delegate to the New Covenant Baptist Church. For several years, after marriage Helen and John lived in Marion VA, where they raised a family. They relocated to New York where John passed in 1974.  Helen then relocated to New Jersey and was employed by Holy Name Hospital as Head Dietitian. Helen later moved back to Ivanhoe, where she made her home once again and was employed by Wytheville Community Hospital as a dietitian and then went to Max Meadows Head Start as cook.  As arthritis began to affect her hands she could no longer work so she stayed at home and became more active in church activities.

Helen was the last of twelve children and was preceded in death by her Husband John Halsey, her mother and father David and Bessie Crockett, Ten brothers and one sister.

Helen is survived by her daughters, Gloria Fletcher and Pamela Boise; Son-in law, John Boise; Grandchildren, Billy Fletcher, Ryan Fletcher, Anthony Hayes, Jennifer Carlson, Jason Carlson, Tonya Mateychick, Terri Rocca, and a very special granddaughter/daughter, caregiver and friend, Cyndi Dobbs and spouse Ed Dobbs; four great grandchildren and a special great grandson whom she loved dearly Thomas Smith, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
