Obituary

James Jaquelin "Jack" Crosswell, Sr., age 93 of Cripple Creek, VA passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2022.  He was born in Fayetteville, NC on January 2, 1929, the son of the late Jaquelin Daniel Crosswell and Ava Gilliland Crosswell.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Anna Christy Williams and a grandson, James Jaquelin Crosswell, III.

After graduating high school, he joined the US Navy and then graduated from Wake Forest University.  He was a journalist in Raleigh, NC, and then joined the ATF as a special investigator where he became a legend in his field.  He then became a Yellow Freight Investigator, then a police chief in Belhaven, NC. Jack then retired to Cripple Creek, VA where he made his home and then became active in the community; served on the Board of Supervisors.  He devoted his life in helping the poor and oppressed.  He was active in the VFW, the Masonic Lodge where he received his 32 nd Degree in the Shriners.  He was a novelist and had published a book "Murder of a Brother" and had been active in journalism.  In the Wytheville Enterprise he was known as "Beck the Mule".  He also was active in the Anglican Church.

Surviving are his wife of 47 Years, Daphne Crosswell; son, James Jaquelin Crosswell, Jr of Beaufort, NC; son-in-law, James Sharpe Williams of Swansboro, NC; grandsons, Joseph Wood Crosswell, James Sharpe Williams, Jr.; granddaughter, Sarah Diehl.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M., Friday, September 16, 2022 at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dr. Peter Geromel and Mr. Gregory Seeley officiating.  Interment will follow in the Fleming Church Cemetery.  Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post # 9.  The family will receive friends from 12 Noon until 2:00 P.M. prior to the service.
