Jerry Lane Buck, age 78, of Rural Retreat, Va the Groseclose Community passed away at home on Wednesday August 19, 2026. He was born in Smyth Co., Va., on February 15, 1948, the son of the late Fred Vance Buck and Ollie Golden Widner Buck. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Larry Buck and Eugene “Gene” Buck.
Jerry graduated from Marion Senior High School Class of 1966. Not long after graduating, Jerry moved to Northern Virginia where he was a Superintendent for S.O. Jennings Construction Company for 15 years. It was one of the largest construction companies at that time. He oversaw and was hands on with the large pipe installation. Had a love for Caterpillar heavy equipment. He was an active volunteer fireman at the Fairfax Fire Department. He enjoyed playing golf while living in Northern Virginia. He made many close friendships that continued throughout the years. During that time, he met and married Terry Wilson in 1980. They later relocated back to Rural Retreat in 1981. His late twin brother Larry told him about a job opening as a self-employed journeyman lineman doing telephone work. He and Larry worked together everyday. In 1991, Jerry and Terry welcomed a son together Canon Buck. He continued to do journeyman lineman work for 32 years. He was a proud Republican supporter. Jerry loved Southwest Virginia and its beauty. He loved assisting his father in his farming duties. After his father passed he continued with farming. Jerry enjoyed working up firewood. He loved John Deer tractors and equipment. He had an appreciation for hard work and honesty.
While living in Northern Virginia, he was well known for owning and driving a blue 1970 Plymouth Duster, and would street race from time to time, in early years he fully enjoyed drag racing in person and as a spectator. His two brothers Larry and Charlie took the engine out and rebuilt it for Christmas one year for the Plymouth Duster. He had a strong passion for mopar race and street cars along with his brother Larry. His favorite professional Drag Racing Team was Sox and Martin, Ronnie Sox. Not only was he involved with drag racing but his brother Larry and Charlie Buck who raced as well. He and his brother Larry enjoyed riding their mopar muscle cars to cruise-ins and events in later years.
Jerry was a lifelong pilot and a lifelong member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Aviation was something he loved along with his brother Larry. He had a love for RC Aircraft, experimental aircraft to fixed wing Cessna and many others. He and Larry and many friends traveled to many different Airshows and events. He and Larry looked most forward to going to Lakeland, FL., for the sun and fun every year. He was a member of the Mountain Empire Airport and looked forward to going everyday meeting with friends and fellow Aviators whom he considered airport family. He and Larry both loved vintage and World War II Aircraft, loved the sound of a radial engine. He always enjoyed watching the aerial refueling and landing of Military aircraft into the Mountain Empire Airport.
Jerry along with brother Larry enjoyed traveling to various Bluegrass and old-time musical performances. One of his favorite bands such as Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver.
Jerry enjoyed visiting his son Canon at his business. He was always excited to see how the work was progressing on the different vehicles.
He was an active member of Groseclose First Church of God, finding deep joy and purpose in worshipping and serving alongside the church community. Jerry enjoyed a good warm fire in a wood stove and good homecooked food.
He is survived by his son Canon Buck (Brooke Dix), sister Evelyn Buck, brothers Franklin Buck, Randall Buck, and Charlie Buck all of Rural Retreat; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and friends.
Service Details
The family will receive friends for visitation on Monday, August 24, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Lindsey Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 24, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at Lindsey Funeral Home, officiated by Pastor Ramey Thompson.
Interment will follow at the Pleasant Hills Cemetery in Groseclose, Va.
With Brian Burkett, Arlen Taylor, Edmond Compton, Allen Widner, John Pickle, Curtis Pennington, Buddy Hall, Randy Mullins and William Duncan serving as pallbearers
