Larry Calvin Arnold, age 79, of Rural Retreat, VA, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2026. Born in Smyth County, VA, on September 26, 1946, to the late Glenn Paxton Arnold and Nancy Katherine Tibbs Arnold, Larry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a friend to everyone he met.
Larry dedicated many years of hard work as a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. A proud U.S. Army Veteran, he served his country while stationed in Germany, where his adventurous spirit famously led him to tour across Europe. A man of deep faith and a devout member of Grace Lutheran Church, Larry lived his life with a generous heart, always giving to others and lending a helping hand.
A true hobbyist who found endless joy in nature and his community, Larry was an avid bird watcher, wildlife photographer, beekeeper, and gardener. He enjoyed the company of friends, loyally cheering on the Washington Redskins, and making a lasting impact on local youth as a Little League coach. Above all, his greatest happiness came from spending time with his beloved family.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Phyllis Roberts Arnold; his son Archie Glenn Arnold and wife Kim Mabe of Kents Store, VA; his daughter Rachel Stokas and husband Bob of Oak Lawn, IL; and his three cherished grandchildren, Mary Emily Stokas, Jimmy Stokas, and Sonny Arnold.
