Larry James Hooker, a dedicated lineman who served the community through his work with the power company, passed away on May 2, 2026, in Rural Retreat, Virginia. Born on August 24, 1948, in Woodlawn, Virginia, Larry lived a life marked by steadfast commitment to his profession and deep ties to his hometown.

Larry was proud of his military service, having served as a Private during the Vietnam War. His contributions were recognized with the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was also a valued member of the American Legion, reflecting his enduring connection to his fellow veterans and his country.

Throughout his life, Larry remained closely connected to the people and places that shaped him. He was born and raised in Woodlawn and spent much of his life there, nurturing his relationships and community ties. Larry's parents, Willard Chandler and Mabel Canter, preceded him in death. Their memory lived on in the heart of their son.

Larry is survived by those who loved him dearly: his cousin Jane Cherry, special friends Betty Smith, Larry Bralley, and Loretta Wilson, and his beloved dog Molly, who brought him companionship and joy.

A graveside service to honor Larry’s life will be held on May 14, 2026 at 1:00 P.M. Family, friends, and community members are invited to gather at Woodlawn United Methodist Church Cemetery, located at 712 Woodlawn Rd, Woodlawn, Virginia 24381. 

Larry James Hooker’s life was one of quiet strength and devoted service, both to his country and his community. His presence will be deeply missed, but the legacy he leaves behind will endure in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace.
