Obituary

Margaret "Maxene" Yvonne Wallace Huddle of Rural Retreat, Virginia, who was born March 21,1929 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina completed her journey to her Heavenly Home on April 14, 2023. When Maxene celebrated her 94th birthday, She proclaimed it to be "her best birthday ever".

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Mack and Gertrude Wallace and her husband of 65 years, Lilbern Randal Huddle.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Huddle Cress; grandchildren, Ginny Parret (David),  Stephen Cress, Eva Lyons (Ben) ; great grandchildren, Calder Parret and Henrik Parret, all of Anchorage, Alaska.

Maxene was a long-time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church serving in the choir, Sunday School, church council, and Lutheran Church Women.  She was generous with her time in the community. She was a member of the Rural Retreat Women's Club, Friends of the Rural Retreat Library, the Literary Club, and the Lions Club as well as volunteering with the bloodmobile and at the voting polls.  Maxene was an avid reader, enjoyed playing Canasta and Bridge with her friends, and liked to travel. She enjoyed working as a Claims Representative for the Social Security Administration for 22 years. Her family and friends will miss her strong, independent spirit.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank all those who helped Maxene stay connected to her community during the last years of her life. You sent flowers and cards, made calls, wrote letters and visited.  You brought treats, books and other gifts and even visits from her dog, Hannah. There were many who kept her in your thoughts and constant prayers. Each gesture made a difference and was greatly appreciated. The staff at Mt. Laurel Rehab and Nursing and Wythe Hospice of Southwest Virginia provided gentle, compassionate end of life care.

A celebration of Maxene's life will be held on Thursday, April 27th at 12:00 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Crockett, VA. with inurnment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive visitors an hour before the service at the church. Following inurnment, all are invited to share a meal in the church fellowship hall.
