Martha Riggins Dougherty

Martha Louise Riggins Dougherty, age 76, of Rural Retreat, VA passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2026. She was born July 13, 1949 in Wythe County, daughter of the late Henry and Frances Burcham Riggins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Steve Dougherty, 3 brothers, infant Robert Riggins, Edd Riggins and Larry Riggins, Sr., and grandson, Brandon.

Survivors include 4 sons, Barkley Lee Fortune of Wytheville, Billy and JJ Fortune of Rural Retreat, Joshua Smith of Wytheville and Logan Fortune of Rural Retreat; 2 daughters, Tina Ball of Wytheville and Misty Bass of Rural Retreat; a sister, Linda Gayle Shinault of Max Meadows and a sister-in-law, Linda Faye Riggins of Max Meadows; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and many extended family and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2026 at the Barnett Funeral Home with the Reverend Rick Lindamood officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before service time.

Burial will follow in Bethany Community Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to the funeral home to assist them with funeral expenses. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, VA is serving the family.
