Marvella Joann
Busick
April 2, 1927 – February 23, 2026
Marvella Quisenberry Busick, age 98, of Cripple Creek, Virginia, died on Monday, February 23, 2026. Born in Gary, West Virginia, on April 2, 1927, to Orval Lee Quisenberry and Cora Lee Spraker Quisenberry, she was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim Busick, brothers Bill Quisenberry and Orval Quisenberry, daughter Sandra Akers, and granddaughter April Busick.
She spent her early years in Gary, West Virginia, before the family moved back to Cripple Creek after the passing of her father. There she would meet her husband Jim, and they graduated from Speedwell High School together. After spending several years of married life with Jim's parents, Marvella was instrumental in the purchase of the farm in Cripple Creek in the mid 1950's where they lived the rest of her lives, something she was very proud of accomplishing.
Marvella was a self-proclaimed "farmerette" who could do – and did do – just about any chore entailed with daily life on a farm. Her husband Jim was often away during the day or throughout the week for work, and Marvella kept the farm running while also managing the schedules of five busy children. Never one to favor tan lines on her arms, Marvella could often be seen from the road driving a tractor in a field in a bikini top, fortunately never causing any traffic mishaps. She also perfected the art of squirting cow's milk, with amazing accuracy, at unexpected guests to the milking barn.
In later semi-retirement years, since life on a farm doesn't ever seem to allow for full retirement, she and Jim enjoyed spending evenings driving around, visiting with friends, and grabbing an occasional bite to eat at a local spot. Family gatherings along Cripple Creek were also treasured moments.
As a survivor of breast cancer, Marvella was a fixture at Relay For Life events in Wytheville as a guest of the Amazing Gracers Team and never missed the opportunity to get down low and twist it all about to the "Chicken Dance". Usually soft-spoken in public, this was a time when she would demand everyone get up and dance with her!
Marvella was a devout follower of Christ, and she did not like to miss a day reading devotional passages, especially when she was no longer able to get out and be an active member of Crockett's Chapel in Cripple Creek. The fellowship was a huge part of her life, a place where she made many cherished friendships and took on the ancestry knowledge of the Crockett lineage on her husband's side far better than any software package.
She is survived by her sister Jean Ledger; sons Richard "Dick" Busick (Carole) and Jimmy Busick (ex-wife Ethel); daughters Nancy Herczeg and Melissa "Missy" Carter (Russell); grandchildren Kim Akers, Chris Akers (Kelly), Gordon Lindamood (April), Allison Peeples (Chris), Diana Holiday (Tuck), and Todd Busick; great-grandchildren Gordon, Alyse, Henry, Madeline, Carmen, Marvella, Hendrix, Remi, and Dylan.
