Obituary

With heavy hearts, we share that Mary Aleen Nelson passed away peacefully on November 4th, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Mary was a beloved wife/mother/sister/grandmother, and friend whose kindness, laughter, and love touched everyone she met.

Born on May 4, 1943, in Wythe County to the late Herman and Martha Payne, Mary lived a life centered around family and compassion. She found joy in simple moments — making homemade biscuits with her grandkids, sharing stories over coffee, and ensuring everyone felt cared for. Her home was a place of warmth and welcome, filled with the smell of good food and the sound of laughter.  She will also be remembered for her green thumb and love of gardening, especially her roses.

Mary will be deeply missed by her husband, George Nelson; son, Richie (Heather) Nelson; daughters, Rita (Ricky) Bowman, Lisa (Barry) Jonas; Grandchildren, Kristy (Ted) Furstnau, Brandy (Justin) Grimes, Megan (Scottie) Heldreth, Jarred (Peyton) Jonas, Kendall (Chad) Nelson, Michael Nelson, and Gabriel Nelson. Great-Grand Children: Samuel Kichline, Breanna Grimes, Caiden Arnold, Brantley Heldreth, Avery Taylor, Lillyanna Jonas, Ember-Rae Heldreth, and Dominic Jonas. Sister Bonnie (Kelly) Nelson, Special friends Tommy & Jeanne Dalton, her furry friend Midnight, and numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Friends and family are invited to gather and share memories of a truly remarkable woman whose love will continue to guide us at the home of her daughter, Lisa Jonas.

Graveside services will be private. Reese Funeral Home, Austinville, VA is serving the Nelson family.
