Obituary

Mary I. Racine, affectionately known as Dodie, 82 , of Wytheville, VA (formerly of Conowingo, MD) passed away March 24, 2026 at Bristol Regional Memorial Hospital. Dodie was born April 29, 1943 at Elkton, MD, daughter of the late Helen Isabell Williams Racine and the late Maurice Dallas Racine. She graduated from Rising Sun High School, Rising Sun, MD, class of 1961.

Dodie is survived by her two daughters, Alicia Smith of Conowingo, MD and Karen Barrett of Hendersonville, NC; three sisters, Roxanne Scott (Harvey) of Oxford, PA, Marian Farmer (Toby deceased) of Wytheville, VA, and Patricia Baker (Tom deceased) of Chestertown, MD; 6 grandchildren, Randal Smith (and Wife Courtney Smith), Mathew Smith, Jaime Barrett, Nicole Jones {and partner Josh Daugherty} and Christopher Jones (and Wife Kelly Nicole Jones); 11 great grandchildren, Jeremy Smith, Reece Smith, Hayden Fritz, Allora (Allie) Smith, Danica Smith, Lily Fritz, Albree Fritz, Levi Barrett, Avery Jones, Ashton (Cruz) Smith, Emma Daugherty; nephew Steven Temple; and two nieces Dodi Price and Krissy Heinefield.

She was predeceased by her grandson Thomas Barrett.

Prior to moving to Wytheville, VA, Dodie spent the majority of her adult life in Conowingo, MD. Where she, among other ventures, worked at Aberdeen Proving Ground, co-owned Haffner Plumbing, and retired after many years from the banking industry. She was also a member of Daughters of America as well as American Legion Post 194.

Dodie was very active in sports in High School, she spread that love of sports to her children and grandchildren. Not only did she participate on a volleyball team as a young adult but managed her daughters softball teams, and was an enthusiastic audience member at her grandchildren’s games, oftentimes louder than the parents. She was an avid craftsperson, sewing, crocheting, and making ornaments and other crafts. She made blankets for grandchildren and great-grandchildren, made clothes from everyday wear to formal wear and costumes for herself and other family members, and made her own Christmas ornaments for everyone, she even tried her hand at refurbishing antique furniture.

She had an avid love for music throughout her life, there weren't many times or occasions when music wasn't heard throughout her home. From playing music on the porch with her siblings, and trying out new dance moves of the time, to following her favorite local bands, she was a fan of the oldies and all things country.

There was always a big production at Christmas, elaborate decorations and the biggest tree decked out in ornaments and tinsel, and an overindulgent feast her family would inevitably overstuff themselves with. She continued an on-going family tradition of making Christmas cookies including children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the fun, or as many as she could round up.

From holidays, Easter Egg Hunts to birthday parties, Dodie’s house was a respite for children and grandchildren throughout the years, doing what she could in times of transition in their lives. She had an influence on all of her family..... and will be greatly missed.

There will be no services at this time. A family gathering will be held at a later date.
