Pete Isaac Viars - Husband, Father, Grandfather and Respected Wythe County Businessman passed away March 15, 2024. He was born on March 24, 1929 the son of Reuben and Margie Cregger Viars. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane Viars; three brothers, Malcolm, Howard and Charles; a sister, Ruby.
He is survived by his son, David Viars and wife Betty of Fort Chiswell Va; 2 daughters Sue Porter and husband Alan of Bristol, Va. and Deidre Viars and husband George Karl of Greensboro, Nc.; three grandchildren Lucas Porter and wife Chelsea of Rougemont NC, Darren Viars and wife Patsy of Fort Chiswell Va., Kaitlin DeCross and husband Matt of Somerset Ky.; 2 great grandchildren Desiree Williams and his namesake Isaac James DeCross; three siblings Maxine Dunford, Frances Lawson and James Viars.
He attended Grahams Forge Elementary School, Max Meadows High School. He attended Wytheville Community College where he acquired his GED and a Business degree. He did so while raising his family and working a full-time job.
He retired from Hobert N Grubb, Inc in Wytheville where he worked for 35 years and served as President for 12 years. In his early career he would spend weekends serving customers who had plumbing, electrical, etc. issues on the weekends. Many phone calls were answered for assistance! He was also a Gentleman Farmer raising beef cattle to supplement the family income. After retirement he enjoyed mowing on his John Deere, bush hogging on his tractor, watching Nascar and VT Sports.
He was a founding member of Fort Chiswell Methodist Church and remained steadfast in his support of the Church and his faith.
He served on the Wythe County Industrial Development Authority for 18 years. He worked to bring employment and opportunity to Wythe County.
He was a member of the Max Meadows Ruritan Club and Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge #235 AF & AM.
His smile, optimism and one-liners are greatly missed. He was one of a kind!
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2024 at Fort Chiswell Methodist Church with the Reverend Rick Lindamood officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 P.M. until service time at the church. Burial at West End Cemetery will be private.
