Phyllis Mildred
Kirk
April 18, 1940 – December 16, 2025
Phyllis Mildred Patrick Kirk, age 85, of Wytheville, VA, passed away on December 16, 2025. Born April 18, 1940, in Tannersville, VA, she was the daughter of the late Robert Neal Patrick and Ruth Griffitts Patrick. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Ann Patrick, and by her beloved husband of 59 years, Alexander Dean Davis Kirk.
Phyllis grew up in Bland County and graduated from Ceres High School in 1957. She later attended Radford College, where she earned her teaching certificate. In 1963, she married a childhood friend and the love of her life, Dean. After several years of teaching elementary school in Rocky Gap, VA, she went on to serve as a career coach for troubled teens, encouraging students through a cooperative program to find employment while completing their high school education in Abingdon, VA. In 1973, she moved to Wytheville, VA, where she devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family and to raising her three children.
A devoted and deeply involved mother, Phyllis was actively engaged in her children's school and extracurricular activities—of which there were many. Throughout her life, she extended that same love and dedication to her ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She had a playful spirit and delighted in her role as "Nana." She possessed a rare gift for radiating warmth, and laughter, and her greatest legacy lives on through the lessons of love she instilled in each of them. She will be forever cherished and deeply missed by her family.
Phyllis enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, and faithfully attending her children's sporting events. She was an avid baseball fan, especially of the University of Virginia and the Atlanta Braves. Strong in her faith, she was a true follower of Christ and a devoted member of West End Methodist Church for more than 50 years. During that time, she was a regular attendee, volunteered with numerous projects, and served on various church committees.
She is survived by her son, Davis Patrick Kirk of Wytheville, VA; two daughters, Deanna Kirk and Daniel Earl Mabe of Wytheville, VA, and Erin Kirk and Robert Andrew Hallman of Cornelius, NC; her sister-in-law, Helen Kirk Boone of Mt. Pleasant, SC; grandchildren Jason Patrick Kirk, Kara Elizabeth Kirk, Taylor Mabe Ferguson, Avery Kirk Mabe, Travis Steven Hallman, Kayla Michelle Hallman, Hunter Dean Henderlite, Jessica Leigh Hallman, Reagan Davis Henderlite, and Colin Samuel Hallman; great-grandchildren Emmett Roy Ferguson, Dean Daniel Ferguson, Hayes Baker Hallman, Brooks Brady Hallman, and Baby Ferguson due in July 2026; along with several nieces, nephews, and many extended family members and friends.
The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, at Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville. Reverend Natalie Drummond of West End Methodist will officiate. Burial will follow at Zion Methodist Church Cemetery in Ceres, VA, at 1:30 p.m. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Sue McQuaide of Wytheville for the incredible kindness, professional care, and genuine love she showed their mother and each of them during her final weeks. Additionally, they would like to thank the many employees of Wythe Hospice of Southwest Virginia for their guidance, compassion and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ceres High School Alumni Association, West End Methodist Church in Wytheville, or Wythe Hospice of Southwest Virginia. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, VA is serving the Kirk family.
