Raymond Charles Nelson, age 73, of Max Meadows, VA passed away Monday, June 29, 2026. He was born December 14, 1952 in Wythe County, son of the late William O. Nelson and Doris Jean Moody Nelson.
Raymond was a devoted husband and a loving father, a proud G-Pa, caring uncle, brother-in-law, and a friend to many. But he was so much more than the titles he carried, He carried God in his heart and shared his love through every moment of his life.
If you knew Raymond, he loved a Caramel Iced Coffee from McDonald’s. It wasn’t unusual to get a text message from him saying “bring me an Ice coffee?” but if you were going to visit Raymond you just knew to stop at McDonald’s and get him that Caramel Ice coffee.
Raymond found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. Whether he was casting a fishing line into the water, spending Friday nights at the Fort Chiswell football games with family or friends, on Sundays, everything stopped for one thing, watching his Washington Redskins. Win or lose, he never missed a game. That loyalty said a lot about who he was.
Although our hearts are broken, we will think of him every time we see a quiet fishing spot, hear the cheers on a Friday night at a Fort Chiswell football game, sip a caramel iced coffee, or watch a football game and remember how much he loved his team.
He will be deeply missed, but his love, faith, and the life he built with those closest to him will continue to live on in every story shared and every memory held close.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Janet Scott Nelson; their daughter, Carolyn Akers and Bill Hillenburg of Ivanhoe; 4 brothers-in-law; special niece and spouse and caregivers, Melissa and Doug Johnson; granddaughter, Tonya and Michael Green; grandson, Anthony and Megan Fisher; 4 great-grandchildren, Jaedyn Green, Graci Green, Austin Fisher and Eli Fisher; a great-great-grandbaby on the way.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 3, 2026 at the Barnett Funeral Home with the Reverend Don Scott officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, VA is serving the Nelson family.
