Obituary

Regina Carter Crockett, age 96, of Ivanhoe, Virginia, passed away quietly on January 22, 2024 at Pulaski Health and Rehab in Pulaski, Virginia. Born July 30, 1927 in Bluefield, Virginia, Regina was the daughter of Reginald Carter and Beatrice (Froe) Carter.

Regina graduated with honors from Tazewell County High School and Bluefield State College, while also working at Carter Printing and Sign Co. Regina's dream was to be a physician. And although she applied to, and was accepted by, Meharry Medical College, she was unable to fulfill that dream because of a family tragedy. But she found other ways to serve and help others by becoming a school teacher. It was while teaching at Oldtown School in Galax, Virginia that Regina met her future husband, Ernest Deans Crockett. And even after she retired from teaching, many years later, it was the kind words from her former students that brightened her day when they saw her in public. We thank many of those same former students who have reached out to our family with their condolences and fond memories of their teacher, "Ms. Carter". We also thank Pastor Shelly Kyle, who prayed with Regina in her final moments and who Regina saw as the daughter that she never had. Regina joked that when cousin Shelly was around baby Reg Ernest, his shoes stayed clean… because she never let his feet touch the ground.

Regina is survived by her son, Reginald Ernest Crockett (Diana), her sister, Susan Slaughter (Clarence), many nephews, nieces, grand nephews and nieces, as well as innumerable friends, and especially those who cared for her so lovingly at Pulaski Health and Rehab. The Crockett family would also like to extend our gratitude to the wonderful staff of Meharry Medical College for so generously honoring the memory of this prospective medical student, who would have proudly attended this fine institution, had that been in God's plan.

Deceased sisters and brothers: Ivanne Stewart (Taft), Jacqueline Grimes (Elbert), Deborah Carter, Jauncie Whitfield (Bert), Froe Carter and Reginald Carter, Jr.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 10, 2024 at the Barnett Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until service time.

Regina will be laid to rest at Red Bluff Cemetery in Ivanhoe, Virginia at a later date.

Regina Carter Crockett: Beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend. A woman who loved learning as much as teaching… a true inspiration and role model to those who knew her.

We ask that our Lord and Savior now accept His departed child into the great Kingdom of our Heavenly Father.
