Obituary

Robert Allen (Bobby) Doyle, age 80, of Wytheville, VA died July 2, 2021 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN. He went to be with the Lord, to whom he dedicated his life.

Bobby was born in Smyth County on March 15, 1941, the son of the late Garland R. and Rose W. Doyle of Atkins, VA. He was a former Chief of Police with the Wytheville Police Department, having served in that capacity from 1984 to March 1993. He was an honorary member of the Virginia Association of Chief of Police.

Bobby graduated from Marion High School in 1959. He worked for the Brunswick Corp. in Marion for a brief time after graduation until he was drafted in the U.S. Army and served 2 years at Fort Rucker, Alabama in 1962 and 1963. While stationed there, he was a Radio-Telephone operator in the Communications operations attached to an artillery unit. Following his discharge from the Army, Bobby joined the reserves and received his discharge in 1968. In June 1968, Bobby joined the Wytheville Police Department as a patrolman. Since his employment in 1968, Bobby had served in each rank in the department and in March 1984, he was appointed Chief of Police of the Wytheville Police Department. He was the recipient of the "Policeman of the Year" award given by the Wythe County Kiwanis Club in during the 1976-1977 Kiwanis year term.

In December 1990, he was presented the Community Builders Award by Wytheville Fraternal Mason Lodge #82, a non-mason who has made a contribution to the betterment of the community. In March 1993, due to his declining health, he retired from the Police Department. He was a member of the Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church in Atkins and a former member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Wytheville. Bobby always believed in hard work, loving and serving God and loving family while making friends along the way; made for a wonderful journey in this life.

In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by his brother, William Doyle.

Surviving is his wife of 46 years, Linda A. Doyle. As Bobby's health continued to decline, they moved to their home in Marion, March 2019. There, Linda was his constant caregiver and companion throughout his illness. Also surviving are two sisters, Barbara Doyle and Virginia Doyle; two brothers, Charles Doyle and Herman Doyle, all of Rural Retreat, VA; two nephews, Joey Doyle and wife Shelia of South Carolina and Stan Doyle of Marion.

Funeral services for Robert Allen "Bobby" Doyle will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 8, 2021 at the Barnett Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Sage officiating.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Entombment will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2021 in the chapel of the Mausoleum at Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion, VA. A brief service with military honors will be conducted by the Francis Marion V.F.W. Post # 4667.

Flowers are welcome and anyone that wishes may make memorial donations to the Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church Building Fund, Atkins, VA, the Wytheville Police Department and the ASPCA society.
