Dr. Sheryl Lyn Taylor (70 yrs. of age) of Crockett, Virginia was welcomed into the kingdom of heaven, August 18, 2018. Sheryl was born on February 13, 1948 in Phoebus, Virginia. She grew up in the small town of Davie, Florida where she attended a Catholic school. She graduated from the University of Florida and later was the 30 th woman to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1974.
Sheryl is survived by her classmate, best friend, husband of 46 years and co-founder of Wythe County Animal Clinic, Dr. Larry Thomas Taylor, of Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. The two were wed on August 19, 1972 in Hollywood, Florida. Together, Larry and Sheryl raised the following eight children and welcomed 26 grandchildren: Thomas and Heather Taylor of Belmont, North Carolina (Lowe and Sloane); Levi and Jessica Taylor of Scottsville, Virginia (Jacob, Rebecca, David and Abigail); Seth and Debra Taylor of Waverly, Alabama (Will & Ashton Ruffin, David & Sarah Ruffin, Ben Ruffin and Collins Taylor); Thad and Stefanie Taylor of Crockett, Virginia (Marshall, Emily, Elijah, Isabella, Olivia, Isaiah, Noah, Caroline and Amelia); Leah and Matthew Anderson of Chilhowie, Virginia (Robert); Sarah Martin of Rural Retreat, Virginia (Justin, Christopher and Alice); Simon and Alex Taylor of Auburn, Alabama (Austin and James); Luke Taylor of Huckleberry, Virginia (Leland), son-in-law, Todd Martin of Crockett. Sheryl is preceded in death by her parents, Sherrell Patrick and Margaret Schmidt Whittaker.
Sheryl was a faithful Christian woman who was a loving wife, a devoted mother and grandmother and a loyal friend. She was a dedicated veterinarian and avid horsewoman. Throughout her life she was not content to follow the beaten path, instead she went where there was no path and left a trail for others to follow.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in honor of Dr. Sheryl Lyn Taylor to the "Kathy Miller 4-H Endowment" for Wythe County 4-H, VA Tech University Development (0336), 902 Prices Fork Rd., Blacksburg, VA 24061 or the "Indians Inc. Rural Retreat Athletic Booster Club", P.O. Box 22, Rural Retreat, VA 24368.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 4:00 P.M. Sunday, August 26, 2018 at the Rural Retreat Community Center with Rev. Steve Alderman and Mr. Roger Dalton speaking. The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until service time where there will be a meal provided during the visitation.
