In Loving Memory of Shirley Matney Caudill

April 7, 1945 – July 30, 2026

With profound sadness and endless love, we celebrate the life of Shirley Matney Caudill, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, nurse, and friend. Throughout her life, Shirley was known for her compassion, generosity, and unwavering dedication to caring for others.

For 35 years, Shirley faithfully served at Wythe County Community Hospital, where she worked as a Labor and Delivery Nurse, Director of Obstetrics, and House Supervisor. She welcomed countless babies into the world, comforted families during some of life's most meaningful moments, and earned the respect and admiration of her coworkers through her exceptional leadership and caring spirit. Nursing was more than a profession to Shirley—it was her calling.

To her family and so many co-workers, she was lovingly known as "Mawmaw." That name reflected the warmth, comfort, and unconditional love she shared so freely. She had a way of making everyone feel like family, always offering a kind word, a listening ear, or a helping hand. Her gentle heart, generous nature, and quiet strength touched all who knew her.

Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, J.C. Caudill, and by her parents, Ralph and Anne Matney. Brothers Ralph (Butch) Matney, and Raymond Matney.

She leaves behind her loving children and spouses, Christina and William Pauley Jr., Richard and Andrea Caudill, Randy and Monica Caudill, and C.J. Caudill and Wendy Heller, who will forever cherish her love, guidance, and example. She was the proud and devoted Mawmaw Shirley to her 16 grandchildren, whom she loved with all her heart, and to her 13 great grandchildren and 4 great- great-grandchildren, who brought her immeasurable joy and pride.

Shirley was a long-term member of Groseclose Chaple Church. Where she beautifully played the piano on Sundays.

Shirley's legacy is one of compassion, faithfulness, and unconditional love. Whether caring for patients, supporting her family, or simply brightening someone's day with her smile, she lived a life of service and kindness. The countless lives she touched are a testament to the remarkable woman she was.

Though she is no longer with us, her love will continue to guide us, her memories will comfort us, and her example will inspire her family and friends.

A visitation service will be held Friday, August 7, from 6-8 pm, at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat, Va. A memorial service will be held on August 8, at 1 pm, at the Rural Retreat Methodist Church. Pastor David Payne officiating. A private inurnment will be at the Groseclose Chapel Cemetery at another time.

She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
