Shirley Rivers Cormier, aged 62, died peacefully on January 16, 2018. She lost a long and courageous battle with cancer, passing away at home surrounded by loved ones. Shirley was born January 31, 1955, in Syracuse NY, and is the daughter of the late Aldrick and Shirley Rivers.
Shirley touched the lives of many through various organizations. She volunteered at the Bland and Wytheville libraries, Wythe County Community Hospital, St. Mary Mother of God Catholic Church, and local Chautauqua festival. In her spare time, she enjoyed participating in the Master Gardeners' club and spent many joyful mornings swimming at the Wytheville Rec Center.
Shirley was not only inspirational, caring, and strong, she was an extraordinary business woman. She established a successful home daycare in New York that prospered for several years. Locally, she worked part time for the USPS as a rural route driver. Shirley found wonderment in all aspects of life, appreciating the beautiful scenery and wildlife she beheld along her route.
Her adventurous, fiery spirit and zest for life will forever remain in the memories and hearts of all. Her surviving family will always remember the valuable and delightful time spent with her. Shirley is survived by her loving husband Paul Cormier of Bland VA. Son Brian Chase and his wife Kelly of Ellicott City MD and their three daughters: Madeline, Riley, and Avery. Her daughter Jennifer Chase and fiance Gary Pierre of Schenectady NY. Her daughter Danielle Cormier of Charlottesville VA. Son Andrew Cormier of Austin TX. Her brother Dan and his wife Shannon of Henderson NV, and brother Mark and wife Heather of Punta Gorda FL, as well as several nieces and nephews. Shirley is preceded in death by her son, Christopher Cormier.
Visiting hours will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary Mother of God Catholic Church; 370 E Main St, Wytheville, VA with a prayer service to follow at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the church.
