Shirley Ann
Hankla
January 8, 1939 – February 22, 2024
Shirley Ann Hankla (Ann) of 1620 Windsor Run Lane in Matthews NC passed away on February 22 after a long fought battle with cancer.
Ann was born on January 8, 1939 in Crockett, Virginia to John and Geneva King. She was predeceased by her husband, Jim Hankla and her sisters Nancy Roberts and Becky Radcliffe.
Ann was married to her wonderful husband of 50 years, Jim. They had a beautiful life together and enjoyed travel, bridge, boat riding and friend and family gatherings. They leave behind two children, Millie Allison (Berry) and Jay Hankla (Tiffany) to cherish their memory, as well as 4 grandchildren, Annie Allison, Will Allison, Trey Hankla and Madison Hankla. Ann also leaves two loving sisters, Eleanor Rogers(Fred) and Linda McBride.
Among many other qualities, Ann was always generous, a great cook, and loved by many friends that she met at her diverse array of social groups as well as her church, St. Stephen United Methodist. She was smart and resourceful, educating herself on sports, the stock market and current events. She was a strong woman who defied her small stature and those that knew her will carry her spirit of resilience with them. Ann bravely fought cancer with all of her might and she believed she could conquer it until the very end. Ann loved her last 2 years at Windsor Run and enjoyed her many friends but especially, Joyce Fink who lovingly organized care teams to help with daily radiation treatments and meals.
There will be a memorial service in the theater at Windsor Run on March 3 at 4pm and a family burial in Virginia. In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
A graveside memorial service will be held Sunday, March 24, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat.
