Stephen Darryl Reynolds, age 67, of Wythe County, Virginia, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, November 1, 2026 in Wythe County, VA. He was born in Wytheville, Virginia, on August 29, 1959 to the late James and Rosa Lee Reynolds.
Steve graduated from Fort Chiswell High School and pursued an undergraduate degree in North Georgia. After a successful fleet management career with Southern Bell in Atlanta, Steve and his wife, Trina, moved to Denver to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Denver. There he met and befriended fellow students from all over the world. He got so much joy out of talking to people and finding out all about their lives and where they were raised. He cared deeply for others, and this moved him into a job with Compassion International, which took him literally all over the globe helping children living in poverty.
Steve and Trina lived a life of Great Adventure for almost 38 years. Married on New Year's Eve ("Everyone celebrates our anniversary," he would say), they hiked and camped all over the U.S, traveled abroad, ate ice cream in every country, waded every creek, and made friends wherever they went. Nothing surpassed the joy they found in having their children, though, and soon there were five Reynolds on the adventure.
But Steve couldn't stay away from home and moved his family back to Wythe County. He loved the people here that he knew all his life, their stories, the history. He loved his extended family, meeting at the river for the 4th of July, and all the new friends he met when he came back.
Steve's deep faith has grounded him during his life. The one resounding message that he said to just about everyone was, "Be the person God created you to be." It is a message he shared often with his children, who are the joys and treasures of his life.
Steve loved to walk, anywhere, anytime. City streets, country roads, up the hills through the woods at home. He shared that love with his daughter, Aaliyah, and together they have walked and talked many miles.
Steve was an avid shade-tree mechanic, a skill he learned at his father's shoulder as he held the light and passed him tools. He has passed that down to his own son, Eric, and they have spent many an hour under the hoods of various trucks and cars.
Steve also loved music, all kinds of music. A love he shared with his children. He so enjoyed hearing them play and sing and always dreamed big dreams for them of where music could take them.
Beloved husband of Trina Reynolds, father of a daughter and two sons: Aaliyah Reynolds Shuler, her husband Jacob Shuler, Eric Reynolds and his wife Alexis Chandler Reynolds, and the late Austin Reynolds. Steve cherished his grandchildren Ryan and Charlotte Reynolds, and Callahan Shuler. Pa loved to take the grands down to the creek to skip rocks or to listen to them playing and laughing.
Steve is also survived by his siblings, Terry Reynolds, Teresa Joiner, Regina Moon, Rick Reynolds, and Mark Reynolds, and many beloved family members.
Steve was a warrior, and he often fought for justice on behalf of others. He fought with all he had to beat this disease but found perfect healing in the arms of His Creator.
We are so very grateful for each and every person who has walked this path with us. We couldn't have done it without you.
Special thanks to Steve's hospice nurse, Christy, and the wonderful team at Wythe Hospice of Southwest Virginia. We were well taken care of by them, and we are very thankful for their expertise and love. A memorial service will be held at Austinville PH Church in Austinville, Virginia on Saturday, November 7. Visitation is at 1:00, service to start at 2:00. Austinville PH Church: 1730 Austinville Rd, Max Meadows, VA 24360
