Timothy Mitchell
Cowan
August 28, 1945 – October 22, 2025
Timothy (Tim) Mitchell Cowan, 80, of Rural Retreat, Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on October 21, 2025.
He was born on August 28, 1945, in Arkansas, to Gordon and Lillie Cowan, the youngest of their large and loving family.
Tim dedicated his life to service — first to his country, as a proud member of the United States Army, and later to the community through his career with the Maryland Department of Transportation, from which he retired after many years of commitment and hard work.
Faith was the foundation of Tim's life. He was a devoted member of Sharon Baptist Church, where he found great joy in fellowship and worship. When he wasn't serving others, you could find him tending to his garden, enjoying a good book, or sharing his warm humor and wisdom with those around him.
If you asked Tim how he was doing, he'd smile and say, "If I was any better, I'd be in heaven." That joyful spirit and steadfast faith touched everyone who knew him.
Tim was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Lillie Cowan, and his eleven siblings.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Cowan; his children Mike, Melissa, Alicia, and Timmy; stepchildren Ed, Josh, and Tonya; countless grandchildren, great grand children, nieces, nephews, and cousins who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Sharon Baptist Church, 219 Sharons Dr, Rural Retreat, VA 24368 with Pastor Jack Rutherford officiating, military rites by The US Army National Honor Guard and the American Legion Post # 229. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., with a service at 11:00 a.m. and fellowship gathering immediately following the service in the church hall. The service is open to all who wish to honor and remember Tim's life.
Tim will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but there is comfort in knowing that he is now at peace and rejoicing in heaven with the Lord he loved so faithfully.
