Walter William Atwell of Rural Retreat went home to be with his Lord on Saturday March 16th Born November 1st 1933, he was the son of the late Truby Atwell and Bertha Atwell of Groseclose.

Walter was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing and spent many days doing what he loved. He retired from Southwest Virginia Mental Institute (former Southwestern State Hospital) in 1995. He was a friendly, caring person who never met a stranger. He would always be smiling and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Usually those conversations would somehow get around to talking about hunting or
fishing and that made his day. He was a gentle soul and a friend to all.

He is survived by his son Shane Atwell of Lenox, GA, sisters, Gladys (Tupie) Johnson of Rural Retreat and Ruby Cox of Rural Retreat. Brother, Roy (RC) Atwell of Rural Retreat. Grandsons Greg(Toni) Atwell of Hauptstuhl, Germany, Gary(Rachel) Atwell of Augusta,
GA, Grant Atwell of Lenox, GA. Six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife Doris Atwell, sisters, Evelyn Smith and Ethel Childers and brother, Alfred Atwell.

Services will be held on Tuesday March 19 at the chapel of Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat with the Pastors Jonathan Hamman and Edward Schaack officiating.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 PM to 7 PM with services beginning at 7 PM.
Graveside service will be held Wednesday March 20 at 11 AM at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Groseclose.
