Walter Clinton White

Walter Clinton White passed peacefully from this life on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 in the early morning hours at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House, Winston Salem, NC.  "Clinton", as he was known to many, was born on September 27, 1928 to Burt and Larmie White in Wythe County.  He was the last surviving member of his family of 6 siblings - Johnie White, Carlos White, Claude White, Elsie Craven, Mary Manuel and Alma Surratt.  He was preceded in death by his grandson, Mark Flora.

Clinton is survived by his bride of 68 years, Daisy (Crigger) White and his three "precious daughters", Jan (John) Flora, Joy (Doug) Hudson and Judy (Jerry) Lowe.  He was "Papa" to seven wonderful grandchildren, Mark Flora, Casey (Richie) Pariseault, Scott (Hannah) Flora, Brian (Susan) Hudson, Lindsay (Brian) Duncan, Lauren Lowe and Landon Lowe.  Papa also enjoyed the love of 6 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and enjoyed a special relationship with his wonderful loving dog, Rozy.

A good Christian man and a civil servant, Clinton enjoyed his work in the Kroger Company for 35 years, and with his family, he traveled to Pulaski, Abingdon and Wytheville stores for several years before returning to Galax to work until his retirement in 1991.  He served 33 years as an active member of the Wythe County School Board and Chairman of the Board for 14 years.  Clinton loved his work with the School Board and was dedicated to ensuring that the school aged children of Wythe County had the best educational opportunities possible and was instrumental in the building program for the schools.  Clinton also served on the Wythe County Chamber of Commerce for 6 years and during his tenure, he developed the Wytheville Farmer's Market which still operates regularly during the summer months.  Additionally, he served on the Wythe County Hospital Board for 4 years.

Perhaps Clinton's most important "job" in life was his service to God and his church, Fort Chiswell United Methodist Church.  A dedicated Christian, he served as Chairman of the Church Building Committee for many years until his death.  He loved the music at the church and thoroughly enjoyed the annual homecoming.

Services will be held at Fort Chiswell United Methodist Church on Friday, May 12, 2017, 2 pm. with the Reverend Rick Lindamood and Chaplain Jim Cox officiating.  Interment will follow in West End Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Thursday evening, 6-8 pm, at Barnett Funeral Home.

The family would like to thank the many friends and family for their support and love during these last days of Clinton's life.  Daisy, Jan, Joy and Judy especially thank Kay Sutphin and Luis Castro for the outstanding care they gave to their daddy during the last months of his life.
